Fall in Love with Gardening
There’s something magical about fall gardening in Houston. After the long, hot summer when the heat keeps us indoors more than we’d like, the arrival of cooler weather feels like a gift. Stepping outside in the mornings and evenings becomes a pleasure again, and the raised beds that sat quietly through the hottest months are suddenly ready to come alive. Gardening in the fall is less about surviving the sun and more about savoring the season—it’s a time when tending the beds feels joyful rather than draining.
Fall vegetables and herbs are part of what makes this time so special. Cool-season crops like carrots, beets, and radishes thrive in the raised beds, rewarding patience with sweet, crisp harvests. Leafy greens like kale, spinach, and mustards return to the garden after their summer absence, along with herbs such as parsley, cilantro, and dill that bolt too quickly in the heat. These plants love the mild Houston fall and give us flavors that feel fresh, grounding, and nourishing after a season dominated by heat-tolerant summer vegetables.
Beyond the produce itself, there’s a rhythm to fall gardening that makes it easy to fall in love with. The air feels gentler, the soil is easier to work, and the time spent outside feels restorative instead of exhausting. Raised beds make the work even more enjoyable—less bending, better drainage, and a sense of order and intention that fits the slower, reflective pace of autumn. It’s not just about growing food; it’s about reconnecting with the outdoors, savoring the cooler air, and remembering how good it feels to care for something with your hands.
Happy Gardening!
