Summer Lovin’ in Spring Valley

Some backyards just need a little extra intention to become something truly special. That was exactly the case with our Spring Valley project.

When our clients recently installed a beautiful new pool, they quickly realized something was missing. The space beside the pool was an uneven grassy area with no dedicated place to relax, sunbathe, or gather. For a busy family with two daughters who couldn't wait to lounge by the pool, creating a functional outdoor living space became the perfect next step.

The Client

As we got to know Bethanie and toured the property, it was clear this project had incredible potential. Not only did the family want a comfortable tanning and lounging area, but they also hoped to incorporate seasonal vegetables, fresh flowers, and herbs. They already had some gardening experience and were excited to expand their growing space.

Even better, we had just completed a raised garden bed and landscaping project for the neighbor directly behind them. That's often how Garden Girls grows—neighbors inspire neighbors, friends tell friends, and before you know it, everyone becomes a Garden Girl (and guy)!

The Design

Before: Unused lawn next to pool

Working with the architectural lines of the home, we designed a new 16' × 10' tanning patio that fits perfectly with the scale and plan of the pool. Raised L-shaped garden beds frame the patio, creating an inviting outdoor room that feels intentional and welcoming. Our custom ‘Ivy’ arch connects the gardens, adding vertical growing space while providing a gorgeous backdrop.

Before: Unused lawn

The unused grassy space transformed into a beautiful garden!

But the transformation didn't stop there.

To maximize both beauty and functionality, we extended the landscaping along the opposite fence line and added two additional raised garden bed areas. A shady corner became the perfect showcase for Bethanie’s incredible hydrangeas—seriously, we all have major hydrangea envy! She has the magic touch. In a sunnier location, we created a dedicated herb garden, putting fresh, homegrown flavors just steps from the kitchen.

Versatile Outdoor Living

One of our favorite features of this design is its versatility. During the summer, the patio is the perfect place for lounge chairs and poolside relaxation. As the seasons change, the furniture can easily be rearranged to accommodate a harvest table for holiday dinners, a cozy fire pit for evening gatherings, or whatever the family needs throughout the year.

The end result is more than just a beautiful backyard—it's an outdoor space designed to grow with the family. It blends relaxation, entertaining, and productive gardening into one cohesive landscape that can be enjoyed throughout every season.

Thoughtful Design

Projects like the O'Brien backyard remind us that the best outdoor spaces aren't just beautiful—they're thoughtfully designed to bring people together while making everyday life a little more enjoyable.
