What Should I Put in My Raised Bed?
One of the most common questions Garden Girls get asked is what do we put inside our raised bed gardens.
Invest in Quality Soil
Installing a raised bed garden is an investment, and the key to growing vegetables successfully is using high-quality soil. Healthy soil provides the essential nutrients plants need to grow and thrive. Every raised bed we install is filled entirely with nutrient-rich sandy loam soil, topped with leaf mold compost. At planting time, we also add a slow-release organic fertilizer and blood meal for an extra nitrogen boost.
Using 100% nutrient-rich soil (instead of filling beds with branches or cardboard) ensures plants have the best possible start. This is especially important because many vegetables have deep root systems—some over 24 inches, with most reaching 12 to 18 inches. Good soil makes gardening easier and more productive, and we’ve found it’s worth the investment to set up our clients for success.
Allow for Proper Drainage
In Houston, raised beds are essential for growing vegetables because the clay soil here drains poorly and lacks nutrients. That’s why our raised beds are typically two feet high and completely open at the bottom. This design allows for excellent drainage while maintaining a connection to the earth.
Plan for Success
When you’re ready to grow your own vegetables, herbs, and flowers in raised beds, be sure to budget for high-quality soil. It’s the foundation for a healthy, productive garden and the best way to kick-start your gardening journey!
